This past Tuesday, thanks to Mystic Makerspace and the Medford Public Library, 20 people gathered to learn how to make an exfoliating scrub with me. I think everyone had lots of fun, learned something new, and we certainly left the room smelling amazing for the next people. For me, the true power of the experience was the deeper learning I achieved by preparing to teach others. It helped solidify my own thoughts about the basic ingredients I use and really helped shape the approach I want to take to skincare and life.
Recipe and Ingredients
After going over the science of skin and a deep dive into the ingredients available, I led the class through this basic scrub recipe:
Here are some examples:
Sensitive Skin: Oatmeal, Avocado Oil, and Chamomile or Green Tea
Oily Skin: Ground Rice Flour, Grapeseed Oil, and Turmeric
Mature Skin: Coffee Grounds, Brown Sugar, Coconut Oil, and Chocolate
Foot Scrub: Course Salt, Coconut Oil, and Peppermint Essential Oil
General Body Scrub: Sugar, Olive Oil, Lemon Zest, and Lavender Buds
Stay tuned over the next few weeks for more about the specific properties and uses of some of the main scrub components as part of my "ingredient stories" posts. In the meantime, I can now add small class instructor to my resume and enjoy the new found friendships I made talking about dead skin cells and how to slather our bodies in yummy smelling baking ingredients!
Of course, if you would prefer to buy a scrub already made for you check out my Scrubs page.
Yours in joy,
